We can't take four more years

After reading Brother Demmitt's criticism of Barack Obama's choice of spiritual advisor and the possibility of his president bringing a divisive element and fracturing the foundation of our nation I felt a need to respond.

I am a Barack Obama supporter. And I feel come November that he is our best choice to turn our country around from the eight year downward spiral of George Bush's presidency.

Regardless of how you feel about Rev. Wright's words have you heard anything remotely divisive come from Obama's mouth during his campaign? In his response to Rev. Wright's words, Obama took the high road and spoke to the nation as adults, not pandering to our primal instinct of knee-jerk reaction but rather to acknowledge that this is the very reason why America is fractured and divisive.

This election and this country shouldn't focus on attaching the lies and ignorance of others to a candidate because it serves a group's political agenda but rather answer the fundamental question of why are we so fractured as a country?

Could we be fractured because we are in a war so badly mismanaged that there's no end in sight? A war that has cost us 4,000 soldiers lives, wounded over 60,000 and cost the American people more than $500 billion? Could we be fractured because in the last eight years we have seen the price of gas triple? Or that the median household income level has dropped over the last eight years while the cost of living has skyrocketed? Or that the cost of health insurance premiums has risen by 80 percent for a family of four under the Bush administration.

But this election is not about answering those simple problems, right? Its about the possibility that Obama didn't scream from the mountaintops that his spiritual advisor could be a racist when Rev. Wright made those statements in 2003.

I have hope due to polls across this country showing that Rev. Wright has had little effect on Obama's support. Maybe people are finally wading through the rhetoric and asking themselves if we can take four more years of the status quo. And I am hopeful their answer come November is that our nation cannot.
