I've had as much as I can take of 21st century American politics, so much so in fact that I'm seriously contemplating returning to the political position I maintained up until 1979 when I was totally apolitical.
A great many people speak of voting for the lesser of two evils. Is not electing the lesser of two evils endorsing an evil nonetheless; dare any politician today define evil? It's my prediction America in 2009 will have the president it deserves as he or she will be America's own endorsed evil.
I'm sick of watching the current Oval Office denizen and aspirants thereto claiming they are for the people while trashing our Constitution and pandering to individuals and special interest groups that can afford a place at the gaming table. Truly nothing has changed and nothing will.
I'm sick of watching all three desperately seeking to out-Christian the competition. The First Amendment clearly says in no uncertain terms that in America it's not supposed to matter! I'm sick to death of radical fringe preachers being elevated to national importance and handed a nationwide pulpit from which to spew their sick vitriol.
I'm sickened even more when the average voter assumes every word spoken by pulpit-pounders is exactly echoed by and the position of the associated Oval Office aspirant. I'm sick of watching candidates squirm and wiggle trying to spin the reverend's words to moderate the impact and cop some votes.
They should refer to the First Amendment and clearly state that unless they personally use the Rev's words, it's the position of the speaker and the speaker only.
The single thing that sickens me the most is the overt and worse, covert racism that rears its ugly malformed head even in 21st century America, the supposed and self-claimed land of the free and the home of the brave.
Racism was repudiated at the very beginning by the phrase all men are created equal. It's disheartening that so many Americans can't seem to accept that idea and choose instead to argue over freedom of religion, a phrase that does not appear anywhere in the Declaration or Constitution.
If, as many claim, all men are indeed created then it follows that each man's belief is equal in statue. However, I can only wonder why it applies to men only; ladies, have you not an opinion on such an obvious and stated Constitutional inequity?
