Buy cheap books

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Local libraries are doing some spring cleaning and have scheduled book sales during the next few weeks. These events beckon patrons to grab a coffee and come do a little casual browsing. You’re sure to leave with a bag o’ books.

Here’s a list:

Boyd — Today (Thursday) is the last day for the public library’s book sale.

Bridgeport — The library is hosting a book sale Thursday, March 25, through Saturday, March 27. Times are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Hardback books are $1, paperbacks are 50 cents, romance paperbacks are eight for a $1 and videos/DVDs/audio are $1 or as marked. Saturday is $1 per bag.

Newark — More than 3,000 books will be sold at the library on Saturday, March 27, through Saturday, April 3. All books will be priced 25 cents to $2.

*I owe an apology to the Newark Library and its patrons. In the March 4 All Around Wise, I published incorrect dates for the book sale.

Birthday parties planned

seuss2

Dr. Seuss was born March 2, 1904, and local libraries are planning festivities for young fans.

The Rhome Public Library will have a birthday party for Dr. Seuss at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The party is for preschool age children and will include reading Dr. Seuss books and a birthday cake. Children may wear costumes or pajamas.

The Decatur Public Library invites preschool age children to a party at 10 a.m. Wednesday.  Festivities include books, songs, games and a snack.

Although I was disappointed to see that the menus did not include green eggs and ham, the parties are sure to be fun and a wonderful way to get your little ones excited about books.

Library wins award

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

For the second consecutive year, the Decatur Public Library earned the Achievement of Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal League. The library also won the award in 2006.

It’s a prestigious award that was given to only 27 libraries in the state of Texas this year, and librarian Cecilia Barham said it’s rewarding to see that their work is impacting the community.

“I just think it means we’re doing something right,” said Barham. “It’s awarded based on how you’re serving your community, and this is a formal acknowledgement that we’re meeting our community’s needs.”

In case you missed Elfie Elf at the Decatur library last week, check out these photos by Joe Duty. Little ones were mesmerized by the magic of Christmas.

Meet a real, live elf

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

A real, live elf and the big man himself will visit with children at the Decatur Public Library at 4 p.m. today.  Elfie Elf will arrive from the North Pole and entertain the kids with a puppet show, songs and games before Santa stops in for photos.

Parents are asked to bring their own camera, and all kids in fourth grade or younger are invited to attend.

Random thought roundup

Monday, November 30th, 2009

It’s early – very early on Monday. And I’m having a hard time focusing on anything except the promise of a Starbucks peppermint mocha in a few hours.

In my pre-caffeine fog, I want to organize a few random thoughts – we’ve got some things to talk about this week.

***

Boyd Public Library is having a book sale today and tomorrow. Check it out. I love these things.

I did not get to see “The Road” over the long weekend. Did anyone else check it out? I’d like to know what you thought.

Also, I haven’t heard many opinions of the movie “New Moon,” and I know several of you have seen it. Don’t worry, you won’t be chastised if you liked it.

***

Later this week we’ll talk about great gift ideas for readers, and I’ll tell you about a holiday tradition at our house that involves books.

Now, on to the next item on the agenda … Too bad Starbucks doesn’t deliver.
