I really liked "Sarah, Plain and Tall" and "Dicey's Song". I taught both books in my junior high reading class. Not only did we learn characterizations, we learned geography as we tracked Dicey's journey to her grandmother's house. Also, Sarah, Plain and Tall helped my students understand life in a different time period. I too would look for the Newbery and Caldecott winners when looking for good literature to teach.
