Memorial Day

  • May 31, 2010 1:35 pm

We attended a Memorial Day Service today at the Wise County Veteran’s Park.  I was a little tentative to take my kids, knowing the ceremony would be somber and reflective, and as always, I worried their sitting still capabilities would be tested to the limit.  But, since my dad was part of the ceremony, and my Grandpa was in town to participate, I decided it was one of those moments we needed to make into memories.

As we arrived at the park and took our seats, I was suprised at the wonder in my kids’ eyes.  They quietly sat in their seats, and read the program, gazing around at the flags, the men in uniform, and the Memorial itself.  The ceremony began with the posting of the colors, and we watched as my Dad carried the American Flag and my Grandpa saluted that same flag–both veterans, and both there to honor their fallen servicemen.

The rest of the ceremony consisted of stories and reflections from Veterans, as they talked about their own service and the service of their fellow fallen soldiers.  It was humbling to hear these stories, and I couldn’t help but notice the emotion in the crowd as each story unfolded.  Some stories were serious accounts of battle, while others were funny times of training.  Both were stories of our Veterans; Veterans we owe our deepest thanks.

The kids actually excelled in their sitting still capabilities today, maybe even listening and taking to heart a few of those stories, and knowing a little more about our Military and the sacrifices they make for our Country–sacrifices we make note of on Memorial Day, but that we should be thankful for every day.

Wise Hoops-community service disguised as a basketball tournament

  • April 11, 2010 9:00 pm

Friday, the Decatur Jr. Woman’s Club hosted their annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament, and it was an amazing success.  The event profited over $5000 that will directly impact our local community in donations to WARM, CASA, Wise Choices Pregnancy Resource Center, and Wise County Christian Counseling.

I worked the tournament, and in the midst of the fouls, free throws, and food, I kept thinking about those charities and the work they do for our community.  Personally, I’m not in a position to give massive amounts of money to charity-I give what I can, and and then give my time to make up the difference.  And, I can also attend fun events, and give small amounts of money that might add up to larger amounts.  They say “every little bit counts.”

Next week is National Volunteer Week, and there will be snippets of community service offerings everywhere.  Take just a moment and look around at our little town, and see if you can fit in a few minutes here, a few more moments there-or even sign up for an event or two.  You never know-you could have fun, support your community, and help make a difference all at the same time.

Another Egg Hunt!!

  • March 28, 2010 8:25 pm

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt at the Decatur Civic Center at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, for children 5 and under. Sheriff David Walker will cook hot-dogs, and drinks, snacks and chips are provided.

Let’s face it, when you’re a kid, finding little plastic containers of candy is some of the best fun you can have.  If you have a few minutes, head out to the Civic Center this Wednesday with your little ones, and celebrate the Easter Season just one more time.  :)

Youth Fair

  • March 21, 2010 7:45 pm

Smalltowns have a uniqueness all their own, especially small towns in Texas.  This next week, Decatur will be knee-deep in the Wise County Youth Fair, which houses 4-H projects from across any spectrum of possibility.  There will be livestock for showing, cakes for eating, clothes for modeling, photographs for oogling, and many, many more.  These 4-H students have spent the last year nurturing their animals, and honing their skills to “show” during the Fair.  Judges will be brought in from the community to comment and score the entries, and also to give each kid a much-needed “job well done.”  4-H is definitely an organization geared toward the rural community, and this event allows that organization to shine.  Residents from the entire county will make time to come out to the fairgrounds, support their community, and maybe even go home with a new animal or two.

Small town fun?  Maybe so, but worth a little field trip out there to visit with friends and celebrate the pride in a job well done.  Check out the official website for details.

Girl Scout Cookie Time!!

  • February 16, 2010 12:25 pm

They are in Wise County, folks!  Finally!  I have an “in” with a certain little girl scout, and happen to know there are other girl scouts all over the county working hard to sell those little goodies, especially outside the Wal-Mart in Decatur.  Be sure to buy a box or two.  They’re only $3.50, and the proceeds go to the troops and Girl Scout Council for some great activities and upcoming Campouts!
