I’m a Wise County girl. But somehow I had never eaten at Greenwood Grocery.
Luckily, that was remedied yesterday. A crew from the Messenger piled into two cars and drove the 15 or so miles to Greenwood for lunch.
The little country store sells a few essentials, but the big draw is the food. It’s best known for huge, juicy burgers, pie that melts in your mouth and crispy catfish served Saturday nights. We had actually been planning this little lunchtime getaway for about a week, and we were almost giddy with anticipation. (Maybe I shouldn’t speak for the whole group.)
Needless to say, I went all out — fully-loaded cheeseburger with fries and sweet tea. I have to say it lived up to expectations, and the atmosphere was great. It was quiet and laid back — a fine place for conversation.
My only regret is not getting a piece of pie. A few people caved and ate a slice, but I figured if I turned it down, it gave me a good excuse to go back next week. That coconut cream pie will be calling my name!
But as the kind lady at the counter reminded me: “You don’t need an excuse. Come back any time.”
I think I will.
