Coffee commercial kickstarts library

Most of you probably already know, but the Decatur Public Library was named runner-up Best Small Library in America. This is a huge honor and one of which the entire community is proud.

Librarian Cecilia Barham and one of her staff will attend the 2012 Public Library Association meeting in Philadelphia March 13-17 where they will be given an award and a $5,000 cash prize. I’m planning a feature story to highlight the library’s rich history that will run when Cecilia returns from the conference.

In preparation, I’m interviewing Cecilia and library founder Martha Hughes next week. A fascinating anecdote that I’m looking forward to hearing more about is how the money was raised to start the library in the 1960s. Cecilia said Pied Piper Coffee was filming a commercial in the area, and several community members, including Martha, were extras in the commercial. They were paid for their roles, and they pooled this money to start the library.

Cecilia has photos from the making of that commercial, but she’s been told someone  out there has a copy of the actual video. We’re hoping to find a copy and use it some way with the feature story.

If you can help us locate this piece of television/local history, call me (Kristen) at (940) 627-5987 or email me at ktribe@wcmessenger.com. Or heck, just drop by, I’d love to visit with you.
