FIRE DESTROYS BOYD RESTAURANT – Fire tore through Freedom Fried Hamburgers in Boyd Monday morning, destroying the inside of the business. Boyd, Decatur, Rhome. Newark and Paradise fire departments responded to the call shortly after 4 a.m., according to Wise County Fire Marshal Jeff Doughty. Boyd Fire Chief Chris Caster said by the time his crew arrived, fire and smoke were pouring out of the back of the building. “We’re trying to contain exposure to other businesses,” Caster said. “The inside of [Freedom Fried Hamburgers] is probably a total loss.” Caster said the neighboring business, The Pecan House, likely just sustained smoke damage. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The Wise County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Boyd Police Department provided to mutual aid. Rock Island Ave. was shut down in both direction for more than two hours as traffic was diverted around the scene.

1 CRITICALLY HURT IN COTTONDALE WRECK – The driver of an 18-wheeler was critically injured after running a stop sign and colliding with another 18-wheeler on Farm Road 51 near Cottondale shortly before 6 a.m. Monday morning, according to Department of Public Safety Cpl. Lantz Elliot. Elliot said the driver of the first 18-wheeler was traveling east on Farm Road 2123. The other 18-wheeler was going south on FM 51. He was not injured. The driver of the first 18-wheeler was extricated from the cab and taken by ground ambulance to John Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth. A medical helicopter was requested but was unable to fly due to the weather. Elliot said it took nearly 30 minutes to free the driver from the cab. The collision knocked the axle off the trailer of one of the 18-wheelers. Traffic was shut down northbound and southbound on FM 51 as crews worked to clear the wreckage.
