JANUARY WEATHER WRAP – It was another rather dry start to the year as 1.1 inches of rain was recorded in Decatur in January. That’s more than a half-inch below the average rainfall amount of 1.77 inches for January. Temperatures in the month ranged from a high of 72 on Jan. 5 to a low of 24 on Jan. 23.

ELEMENTARY RECEIVES GRANT – Bridgeport Elementary School has been awarded a $10,000 STEM Ingenuity Grant from Devon Energy. The grant money will be utilized to enhance the existing Maker Space at the BES campus.

YOUNG FARMERS FUNDRAISER – Chico Young Farmers will hold a fundraiser for youth fair projects Saturday at Chico Middle School. A chili supper will be served beginning at 5 p.m. with bingo at 6 and a cake auction at 7.

MOBILE FOOD PANTRY – The Decatur Cares monthly mobile food pantry will be at the First United Methodist Church of Decatur Saturday. Distribution is 8:30-10 a.m. in the church parking lot.

YOUTH FAIR ENTRY DEADLINE – The 2019 Wise County Youth Fair entry deadline is 5 p.m. Saturday. Entries will be turned off at 5. There will be an Entry Clinic 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Decatur Ag Building for anyone who needs help entering. Youth Fair Queen information is also due and/or must be postmarked by Saturday. DADDY DAUGHTER DANCE – The Decatur Junior Woman’s Club Daddy Daughter Dance is Saturday at the Decatur Conference Center. Dance 1 will be held from 3-5 p.m. for VIP tickets or 3:30-5 p.m. for general admission. Dance 2 is 6-8 p.m. for VIP or 6:30-8 p.m. for general admission. VIP tickets are $60 per couple ($15 for additional daughter/dad) and general admission tickets are $50 per couple ($15 for additional daughter/dad). VIP’s will be allowed in the venue 30 minutes prior to the dance, reserved seating and an activity voucher. There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres, a live DJ, multiple photo ops, face painting and activities for everyone. YOUTH SOFTBALL – Decatur Youth Softball signups for the spring season is 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Renshaw Park in the concession stand. Cost is $90 per player for ages 6 and under through 14 and under. Call John Coker at 940-389-2170 or email contactdgys@yahoo.com.

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE – The final ballot for this year’s Wise County Messenger’s Readers Choice Awards will be included in Saturday’s paper. Deadline to return the filled out ballot is 5 p.m. Tuesday. Extra copies of Saturday’s paper will be available for purchase in the Messenger office Monday morning.

FUNERALS – Services for Jimmy Saunders of Greenwood and Warren Howard, 97, of Forestburg are pending at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

NO SERVICE is planned for Marsha Van Epps, 72, of Bridgeport. Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

GRAVESIDE service for James Doil Evans, 87, of Bridgeport is 3 p.m. Saturday at Hope Cemetery in Henrietta. Family visitation is 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Hawkins Chapel in Bridgeport.

FUNERAL for William “Bill” Edward Pedigo, 97, of Mountain Home, Ark., formerly of Runaway Bay, is 11 a.m. Feb. 8 at Runaway Bay Community Church with burial at Eternal Oaks Cemetery. Hawkins-Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for Billy Ralph Smith, 78, is 11 a.m. Saturday at 2nd Mile Church in Fort Worth with burial at Chico Cemetery at 3 p.m. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst.
