After twirling across the ring, Christina Thomas unleashed her first throw on a chilly, damp morning at Mike Myers Stadium Saturday.

The Alvord senior watched the disc fly through the air before landing out of bounds just to the left of the boundary.

Her second toss also landed out of bounds.

“Those would have been good ones. I just over-rotated,” Thomas explained.

Thomas had to make a conservative attempt with her third throw to make the finals in ninth place. She was able to move up two spots in her last two attempts to finish seventh in the Class 2A discus final with a throw of 104-4.

Thomas was making her second appearance at state. She entered the meet with the top distance after her throw of 132-5 at the 2A Region II championships.

“It’s very exciting coming down here. This year was more disappointing because I came down here sitting first and didn’t get anywhere near it,” Thomas said.

Bree Baker of Panhandle won the state title with a toss of 126-2 on her final attempt. Kamryn Chapman garnered silver with her throw of 125-10. Sunray’s Rylee DeBord was the bronze medalist with a 124-6.

With temperatures in the 50s, Thomas and the other competitors struggled to get comfortable.

“It was pretty challenging. It’s harder to throw when it’s really cold. We haven’t thrown in this type of weather all year,” Thomas said.

The competitors also had to keep their footing in a damp ring.

“We were all scared that we were going to slip,” Thomas said.

Needing to get a mark with her third attempt, Thomas made a throw of 71-11 to get into the finals. She improved with her next three tosses, breaking 100 feet with the 104-4 on her final attempt.

“I was finally comfortable by the last throw,” Thomas said.
