Slidell’s aggressiveness from the start on Friday did not surprise Lady Greyhounds head coach Lance Shelton.

“You hope that is the attitude you have when you get into the playoffs,” Shelton said. “They got after it and played hard.
“We are going to have to have it in the playoffs like that. It won’t get any easier.”
Senior Cate Zuniga scored a game-high 24 points and the Slidell defensive effort kept Ector under wraps in a 58-25 win at S&S Consolidated High School in a Class 1A Region III area-round game.
“Since we had played them before, we didn’t want to come in with too big of a head,” Zuniga said. “But we had to get stuff done and not let them win.
“We have to get stuff done. We want to go to State.”
Slidell (30-2) advanced to a third-straight regional quarterfinal game against Saltillo, a 44-33 winner over Bryson on Thursday in another area-round game. The Lady Greyhounds defeated Saltillo, 49-40, last season and 44-37 in 2017 en route to reaching the regional semifinals and regional final.
Sophomore Riley Evans’ 11 points led Ector (17-14), who was making their third-straight area-round and overall postseason appearance.
“Coach (Corrie) Evans (of Ector) does a great job,” Shelton said.
Slidell took control with a 9-0 lead within the first two minutes of the game.
Senior Bailey Meyer connected on a 3-pointer on the first possession for either team to give Slidell the lead for keeps.
The first of 10 ensuing Ector turnovers, six which led to Slidell points in the first quarter, followed. Zuniga made a steal to end the Lady Eagles’ first possession and then garnered her first basket on a putback on the other end.
Ector finally scored on a 3-pointer by sophomore Jordyn Blakey. Ector managed only three more points over the final six minutes of the opening frame.
Zuniga had 11 of her points in the opening quarter as the Lady Greyhounds opened up a 24-6 lead.
Slidell scored five of the last 11 points in the second quarter and led 35-15 at halftime. Aurora Deluna had a 3-pointer and Swift added a late basket.
Eleven more by Zuniga powered a 14-0 effort by the Lady Greyhounds in the third quarter, as Slidell took a 49-15 advantage into the fourth.
“Coach (Shelton) told us at halftime to shoot if we were open,” said Zuniga. “I shot when I was open.”
Slidell scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter to lead late by 43, before Ector added the final 10 with eight by Riley Evans.
