The Slidell Lady Hounds fell to Dodd City 37-27 in the Class A Region III final in Mansfield, but they did not go down without a fight.

Down 15 points at the start of the fourth quarter, Slidell’s Bailey Meyer shook loose from the Lady Hornets’ swarming defense and started a furious comeback for the Lady Hounds, which were looking to get past the regional hump in its third appearance in as many years.

After a Dodd City turnover, Meyer hit consecutive 3-pointers to pull Slidell within nine, 33-24. Then, following a third straight stop, Jayden Ellison hit a catch-and-shoot trey, bringing the game to within six points with two minutes remaining.

Slidell coach Lance Shelton said his team stepped up and fought when they could have given up.

“Bailey did what Bailey does. She hit some clutch shots,” Shelton said. “That’s what her and Cate [Zuniga] and our seniors have done all year. Then Ellison hit a good three. We just told them in the fourth [quarter] to hang in in there and we made a short little run. It was just a little too late.”

But Dodd City fended off Slidell’s rally, sealing the game at the free throw line, as the Lady Hounds fell to the Lady Hornets in the region final for the second time in three years.¬†Slidell ends its season with a 32-3 record.

Dodd City held¬†Zuniga and Meyer in check for much of the game, limiting the Lady Hounds’ top scoring threats by denying them the ball.

“We knew what they were going to do by [face-guarding Meyer and Zuniga]. We’ve been working on it, but they did a good job and we couldn’t get it done,” Shelton said.

Slidell managed just four points in the opening quarter, quickly falling into a 11-4 hole.

Dodd City sophomore Dani Baccus took over for the Lady Hornets in the first half, at times pulling up and making shots from four feet beyond the arc.

“She’s really good,” Shelton said. “If she was going to start shooting like she was shooting it that deep and having that type of night, it’s going to be hard to cover her.”

Baccus scored 16 points in the first half to give the Lady Hornets a 23-12 lead at the intermission.

Slidell contained Baccus in the second half, limiting her to two points in the final two quarters.

Jayden Ellison led Slidell in scoring with 12 points. Meyer finished with six points. Aurora Deluna scored five points and Cate Zuniga added four points in the effort.

Looking back on the season, Shelton said he wanted his team to hold their heads high.

“I’m proud of them. They had a great year,” Shelton said. “We lost three games by a total of 20 points. The whole year, I’m just proud of the way they are.”
