Decatur’s Zach Levesque made a big splash at the District 6-5A championships.

The junior won Athlete of the Meet after taking home the gold in 100 freestyle, 200 medley relay, 200 individual medley and silver in the 200 freestyle relay. The award went to the swimmer with the highest point totals from their four events.

“It was special to me because it shows putting in all this hard work pays off,” Levesque said. “If you show up and actively work hard and practice, you do have awards that come from that.”

Levesque led the Decatur boys team to a second-place finish. The Eagles tallied 110 points.

The Lady Eagles also took second, racking up 102 points. Decatur placed second overall behind Northwest with 212 points.

“They work really hard all year,” said Decatur coach Amy Chabek. “I’ve always been impressed with how these kids balance their AP classes, staying up till all hours of the night doing homework – they’re just a great group of kids and incredibly well-rounded. To watch them grow as individuals to support each other is really cool.”

Levesque along with 11 of his teammates advanced to the regional meet, which will be Friday and Saturday at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium. It is Levesque’s third trip to the regional meet.

“I feel like just the atmosphere of being at regionals helps get you in the mentality of being ready to race,” Levesque said. “The top two places go to state.”
