Hanging in the Decatur Lady Eagles’ locker room is a photo from the 2002 team that held the school record for most points in a meet.

Over the years, Decatur coach David Park was adamant the photo remain on the wall as a reminder for what his team should strive for.

“When we were re-doing the locker room, I said ‘No, that picture stays up until we replace it,'” Park said. “We talked about it on the bus. I told them we had a chance. We had to stay focused and ready to go.”

After the Lady Eagles’ performance at the District 8-4A championships Thursday, it appears Park will soon be shopping for a new picture frame.

His group shattered the high water mark of 219 points that stood for 17 years, defending their league title with 236 points Thursday at Porcupine Stadium.

“It’s outstanding,” Park said. “Everybody kept coming in with points and chipping in. Everybody was trying to add their points, and that’s what they did.”

The Lady Eagles took home gold medals in six events: Grace Lowery in the triple jump, Makenna Gantt in the shot put, Makenzie Fox in the 300 hurdles and Hanul Lewis in the 400. The 4×200 and 4×400 teams also finished first.

Fox said breaking the record was on the team’s mind throughout the afternoon.

“We were trying to set a new school record for points,” Fox said. “It’s awesome that we can all contribute to that. We’ve all worked really hard this season to get to where we are today.”
