Alvord ISD trustees Monday unanimously approved the hire of Scott Smiley as the district’s new athletic director and head football coach.

Scott Smiley

Smiley most recently served as the athletic director and head football coach at Fort Worth Christian from 2008-2018, compiling an 85-36 record with the Cardinals. In 2015, Fort Worth Christian went 13-1, as Smiley guided the Cardinals to a TAPPS Division II state championship.

“Coach Smiley’s resume definitely stood out,” said Alvord ISD Superintendent Dr. Randy Brown. “He’s had success. That was important to us. When we interviewed him, it was obvious he’s a coach that definitely knows who he is and what success is about.”

Smiley’s tentative start date is March 25. He has also coached at Valley View and Aubrey and was an assistant at Sanger.

“Coaching at public schools, I’ve always respected that community in Wise County,” Smiley said. “When that job came open, my wife and I felt like it was a good opportunity for us to look into. We know Alvord is a good community. They have a desire to win and be successful.”

Smiley takes over for longtime Wise County coach Pete Hart, who announced his retirement in January. Hart had served as Alvord’s athletic director and head football coach since 2014, compiling a 23-33 record over five seasons.

The Bulldogs finished second in District 4-2A Division I last year before falling to Winters in the bi-district round of the playoffs. Alvord qualified for the postseason each year under Hart.

“Coach Hart has done a great job,” Brown said. “He’s loved and respected in this community.”
