The trial for a Rhome teenager accused of shooting and killing his father at their home two years ago is scheduled to begin next week.

William Wyatt Oakes, 17, was charged with murder after investigators said he killed his father, David Oakes, in their home on Private Road 4732 in the Diamond Ridge neighborhood near Rhome Aug. 18, 2017.

Officers responded to a call about a disturbance at the home around 10 p.m. that Friday night. Officers arrived to find David Oakes, 49, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

William Oakes reportedly fled the scene on a motorcycle. He was located in Albuquerque, N.M., and was arrested the following Monday and brought back to Wise County.

Oakes was indicted in March of last year for the first degree felony charge of murder.

Although Oakes was a few weeks shy of his 16th birthday at the time of the incident, he was certified to stand trial as an adult.

Oakes was originally in custody at the Wichita County Juvenile Detention Center in Wichita Falls but has since been released on bond.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday in 271st District Court in Decatur.

Oakes is represented by Fort Worth lawyer Reagan Wynn with Kearney/Wynn law firm. Wynn previously represented Ethan Couch.

Assistant District Attorney Jay Lapham is serving as lead prosecutor for the state on the case.
