An Aurora home was heavily damaged by fire late Sunday night.

Rhome Fire Chief Darrell Fitch said the house was partially involved when crews arrived, with flames shooting from the roof.

“When we got here, the roof and some of the pillars were on fire,” Fitch said. “It spread from there. The roof collapsed, which caused some spot fires.”

Fitch said the only person inside the structure when the fire started made it out safely.

Fire departments from Rhome, Boyd, Newark, Paradise, Decatur, Haslet and Cottondale responded to the blaze shortly after 10:30 p.m. Despite temperatures hovering around 24 degrees and a wind chill of 13 degrees, Fitch said crews were not having issues with water freezing.

He noted the biggest problem controlling the blaze was a northern wind gusting as high as 15 mph at times.

“The wind is giving us fits,” Fitch said.

Fitch said he didn’t know what caused the fire. County Road 4227 was partially shut down in both directions as crews battled the blaze.
