One person was flown to a Fort Worth hospital following a one-vehicle rollover on U.S. 81/287 in New Fairview Sunday morning.

A 2018 GMC pickup driven by Devin A. Warrick, 44, of Alvarado was southbound on U.S. 81/287 around 9:30 a.m. when he ran off the road.

“Warrick fell asleep while driving and left the west side of the roadway going into the barrow ditch before striking a drainage culvert and overturning,” said Department of Public Safety spokesperson Ricky Hunter.

When the pickup struck the culvert, the impact sent the truck airborne and then into a roll. The pickup came to rest upside down in a ditch on the west side of the roadway, just north of County Road 4421.

Warrick was briefly trapped until first responders could get him out. Once he was extricated, Warrick was flown from the scene by PHI Air Medical to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth with serious but undisclosed injuries.

Southbound traffic on U.S. 81/287 was reduced to one lane for about 1 1/2 hours, and it was shut down briefly while the helicopter landed on the roadway.

East Wise and Decatur Fire Departments, Wise County EMS, Wise County Sheriff’s Office, Rhome Police Department and Texas DPS responded to the scene.
