DHS publications earn honors

Decatur High School’s Nate Carr and The Journal staff captured first-place honors in the Interscholastic League Press 2018-2019 contest.

Carr won for the top entertainment feature with his profile on Decatur mascot Aidan Cottrell placing in the national championships.

The Journal staff garnered top honors for headline writing.

“This year has been amazing with how well everyone has done,” said Carr, who is The Journal’s news editor. “These medals show that we don’t just excel in sports.”

The Journal’s Taylor Durham and Carson Read took second in front page news magazine design. Eden Jones finished second in the infographic/sidebar category. Haleigh Hurst earned honorable mention for her sports news coverage of the football team’s playoff run.

In the yearbook division, the Crag staff garnered a series of honors for the 2017-18 contest.

Hadley Carter, a 2018 graduate, finished second for captions, sports action photo, sports feature photo and academic photo.

Andrea Salazar took third for academic photo and portrait.

Faith Myers, a 2018 graduate, was third in the personality profile story category.

Oliver Gordon received honorable mention for the index and multi-topic spreads. Emily Haney’s work on the club/organization spread earned honorable mention. Marcus Pena received honorable mention for theme and selection development.
