WOODRUFF TO RECEIVE HONOR

Decatur Mayor Martin Woodruff will receive the Decatur Honorary Alumnus Award during the Decatur Baptist College Spring Reunion Friday on the campus of Dallas Baptist University.

Along with Woodruff being honored, the Decatur college classes of 1949 and 1959 will celebrate their 60th and 70th anniversaries.

The reunion luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. in the John G. Mahler Student Center.

THOMAS NAMED CORPS COMMANDER

Luke Thomas of Decatur has been named the Texas A&M Corps Commander.

Thomas is in the class of 2020 and is an industrial distribution major.

VET STUDENTS EARN SCHOLARSHIPS

Two Bridgeport students recently received scholarships from Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences.

Blake Arrington received the Dr. Thomas R. Thedford Endowed Scholarship for his interest in food animal veterinary medicine. A first year veterinary student, Arrington is the son of Mitchell and Lee Arrington of Bridgeport.

Brooke Bennett received a Salsbury Scholarship for her academic achievements and the Harold V. and Jean A. Miller Food Animal Production Medicine Award for her interest in food animal medicine. A third year veterinary student, Bennett is the daughter of Mike and Melissa Bennett of Mustang, Okla.

FERGUSON EARNS DOCTORATE

Beth Ferguson, a 2008 graduate of Chico High School, received her doctorate in philosophy in entomology from the University of Arkansas Dec. 15.

She previously earned her bachelor’s in biology at Sam Houston State University and master’s in entomology and plant pathology at Oklahoma State University.

While at Arkansas, she competed on the Linnean team, an entomology-related quiz bowl, at branch and national conferences of the Entomology Society of America. She was president of the Isely-Baerg Entomology Club and a representative for the University of Arkansas on the student affairs committee for the Southeastern Branch of Entomology Society.

After graduation, she will have a post-doctoral research job with the USDA in Fargo, N.D. She will be researching the effect of pollinators on sunflowers.

She is the daughter of Tom and Ann Ferguson.

SCHMIDT MAKES HONOR ROLL

Anna Schmidt of Decatur was named to the Oklahoma City University president’s honor roll for recording a grade-point average of 3.9 or higher while taking 12 credit hours in the fall 2018 semester.

DUBOSE WINS CHEER TITLE

The Angelo State University Cheer Team, including Mckeeley Dubose of Paradise, won its second straight national title at the United Spirit Association 2019 USA Collegiate Championships held Feb. 22-24 in Anaheim, Calif.

MCARTHUR TO RECEIVE DOCTORATE

Phalassa “Lasi” Fuller McArthur is a candidate for the Doctor of Nursing Practice at the Cizik School of Nursing, University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. The ceremony will be May 16.

Lasi is the daughter of John W. and Beverly Fuller of Boyd and was a 1998 graduate of Boyd High School.
