Back to School


It’s time to set the alarm clocks again and head back to class.

After a long winter break, all Wise County students return to the classroom Tuesday. Monday is a staff development day in most districts.

The countdown can now start for Spring Break for students and teachers alike.

Reading Dog


Nothing is more comforting than having man’s best friend around, especially for a child learning to read.

Ava the reading dog tutor will be at the Rhome Public Library from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday. Call the library, 817-636-2767, to schedule a reading slot with the licensed therapy dog.

Mother Son Dance


Mothers and their sons will get a chance to take to the dance floor together dressed as super heroes for a night of memories Jan. 12.

The Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Department will hold its annual dance for mothers and sons from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Bridgeport Community Center.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Bridgeport City Hall or online at



Legislators report for the first day of the 86th Texas Legislature Tuesday.

Property taxes and school finance will be among the many issues addressed over the next 140 days until the end of session May 29.

Wise County is represented by District 30 Senator Pat Fallon and District 61 Representative Phil King.



The high school football season ended in December but it’s time for a different type of football to get started – soccer.

The Decatur and Bridgeport boys and girls soccer teams are ready to hit the field

The Bridgeport Bulls went 21-4-1 last year before falling in the region final. The Bulls have won three straight district titles and will be under the direction of new coach JD Bales. The Bulls got an early start to the year playing at the North Texas Elite Showcase Thursday through Saturday. The Bulls head to Wichita Falls for the Midwestern State University Tournament Thursday.

The Sissies went to the Burleson Tournament over the weekend and will go to Castleberry Monday. Bridgeport won its first district title last year going 9-10-4. The Sissies fell in double overtime to Mineral Wells in the bi-district round of the playoffs.

The Decatur Eagles will start their 2019 season Tuesday at home against Wichita Falls Hirschi. Decatur made its deepest playoff run last year, advancing to the region quarterfinals. The Eagles posted a 16-11-2 record in 2018.

The Decatur Lady Eagles open the season Tuesday at home against Wichita Falls Hirschi. Decatur went 2-13-3 last season, finishing third in District 3-4A. The Lady Eagles lost in the bi-district round of the playoffs to Abilene Wylie.
