The girls basketball playoffs begin Monday with the bi-district round. Decatur will take on Glen Rose at 6 p.m. Monday at Weatherford High School. Alvord will play Collinsville at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Gainesville. As of press Friday, Bridgeport was still awaiting its first round opponent. The Sissies will either play Godley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Azle, or Brownwood at 6:30 p.m. in Granbury. Slidell will play a one-game tiebreaker at 6 p.m. Saturday night against Bellevue at Bridgeport High School to decide first place in District 22-A. The winner will get a bye to the area round.

Filing for city council and school board elections remains open one more week.

Races generating the most talk are for Decatur City Council and Decatur School Board seats, so it will be interesting to see what, if anything, unfolds next week.

The deadline to file is 5 p.m. Friday. To do so, visit the city secretary or superintendent’s secretary for the entity in which you plan to run.

Sick Kid

There are several nasty bugs going around Wise County, so beware.

Everything from the flu to terrible stomach viruses have been reported. Chico ISD had so many students absent last week the district closed Thursday and Friday.

Things to remember: wash your hands regularly, get plenty of rest and if you’re running fever or otherwise sick, stay home. You need time to recover and you don’t want to expose anyone else.

Self Defense

Wise Hope Shelter and Crisis Center has partnered with the North Texas Karate Academy in Bridgeport to host a free self defense class for all teens, age 10 and older.

The class is 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 16). Your daughter will learn tips and tools to empower and protect herself. Space is limited. To sign up, call 940-626-4585 or email

Youth Fair

The Wise County Youth Fair is around the corner, and local buyers associations are wrapping up their fundraising to purchase projects at the sale of champions.

If you want to help, mark your calendar for the 9th Annual Jimmy Ware Memorial Dinner and Auction, in honor of the late ag teacher and advocate for local youth. The event benefits the Boyd Buyers Association and is 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 16) at Boyd High School cafetorium. Tickets are $15 for ages 13 and older and $10 for ages 12 and younger.
