Polls open at 8 a.m. Monday, kicking off early voting for the May 4 city council and school board elections. Early voting runs April 22 through April 30.

The most compelling races in Wise County this election season are Bridgeport City Council, Decatur City Council and Decatur School Board.

Several local track athletes will put their best foot forward in hopes of landing a spot in the UIL track and field championships April 26-27 at regional meets.

Decatur and Bridgeport athletes will travel to Lubbock and Texas Tech University. Boyd and Paradise competitors will be at Abilene Christian. Alvord and Chico athletes will make a short trip to Springtown’s Porcupine Stadium. Slidell’s region qualifiers will be in Whitney.

The state track meet is May 10-11.

The Decatur Chamber of Commerce luncheon is taking a field trip.

This month’s networking event will be at the Eagle Activity Center at Decatur High School, instead of the Decatur Conference Center. Speaker is Sheila McCollum, DHS Career and Technical Education Coordinator, and she will talk about “CTE: Preparing 21st Century Learners for Post-Secondary Success.”

The CTE program allows students to gain skills that will kick off a career, not simply land them a minimum-wage job. To find out the district’s plan to enhance and grow this program, RSVP for the luncheon by calling the Chamber at 940-627-3107.

Consider opening your heart and home to a horse.

Miss Jo’s Rescue Ranch is hosting Help a Horse Home Challenge Saturday, April 27, at the Wise County Fairgrounds to kick off the annual ASPCA effort with the same name.

The event is 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and admission is free. There will also be affordable horse care clinics on site, including a farrier.

If you have questions, give Miss Jo a call at 940-799-7303.

Nature Run

Wildwood Naturist Resort’s 22nd Annual Skinnydipper Sun Run 5K is Saturday, April 27.

At this, race runners strip it off and streak across the course, all of which is on private property. If you’re shy, don’t worry, you are allowed to wear clothes … but most runners don’t.

In fact, an editor of a certain local newspaper once ran this race. Reading his 2010 column will prep you for the experience if you’re a first-timer. Go to

For information from the resort, email or call 940-627-2280. You can register online at

The race starts at 1 p.m. Wildwood is at 241 Private Road 1179, outside Decatur.
