The driver of a tractor trailer was critically injured Monday morning in an accident at the intersection of Farm Roads 2123 and 51 near Cottondale.

Oscar Ruiz, 53, of Springtown, was transported by ground ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. A medical helicopter was requested but was unable to fly due to weather.

Ruiz was traveling east on FM 2123 and ran the stop sign at FM 51 shortly before 6 a.m., colliding with a southbound tractor trailer, driven by Zachary Suppe, 31, of Endicott, Wash., according to Department of Public Safety Cpl. Lantz Elliot. Suppe was not injured.

Elliot said it took nearly 30 minutes to extricate Ruiz from the cab. The collision knocked the axle off one of the trailers.

Traffic was shut down on FM 51 as crews worked to clear the wreckage.

Firefighters from Paradise, Cottondale and Springtown responded to the accident, as well as DPS Troopers and officers from the Wise County Sheriff’s Office.
