Mary Dell Haskett

Mary Dell Haskett, 91, of Chico, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018, in Decatur.

Funeral was Jan. 3 at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport with Rev. Larry Potts officiating. Burial followed in Chico Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jerry Biff Starr, Ryan Tenberg, Shunte Hall, Blake Martindale, Frank Barkley, Shane Sterett, Naamon Barkley, Jimmy Don Newbrough, Joseph Barkley, Brace Hill, Tammy Bury, Sarah Barkley Perez, Colton Lusk and Brandon Hernandez.

Mary was born May 5, 1927, in Ingold, N.C., to Samuel Thomas and Mary Frances (Ward) Tharp. She married Paul Haskett Aug. 1, 1943, in York, S.C.

Mary grew up in Garland, N.C., singing in the glee club and playing basketball. She attended the Methodist Church and was active in their youth group. When she left school, she went to work in a U.S. Navy war plant in Charlotte, N.C., where she met her husband who was a paratrooper stationed at Camp McCall.

Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chico, the WMU and the Friendship Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband; grandson Kenneth Joe Barkley; great-grandson Jarod Martindale; sisters Ethel Floyd, Elma Rooks and Frances Eline Tharp; and brothers Elvis Jack Tharp and Samuel Thomas “Bob” Tharp, Jr.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Felder of Cheyenne, Okla., Mary Shurtz of Savannah, Barbara Barkley of Chico and Teresa Brewer of Norman, Okla.; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and sister Thelma Lane of North Carolina.
