DeWayne Short

DeWayne ‘Doc’ Short, 69, of Runaway Bay, died Thursday, March 21, 2019, at home.

Memorial is 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport, officiated by Chaplain Brad Gilbert.

Doc was born Sept. 6, 1949, in Roswell, N.M., to Ralph Wayne and Hazel L. (Maples) Short. He married Eugenie McKee June 14, 2013.

Doc attended the University of Missouri in Columbia. He served in the U.S. Navy for over 20 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

After serving our country, he graduated from Baylor Dental School in Dallas. He was also a member of the Dental Association, a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry and a University of Missouri Alumni. Doc was a dentist in Boyd for many years. He was also a longtime member of the North Texas Soaring Association.

After retirement, his favorite thing to do was play golf and hang out with his golf buddies. He was a member of the Runaway Bay Golf Club and Resort for over 20 years.

Doc was a brilliant historian and enjoyed traveling all over the United States. He loved good food and good wine, along with watching classic movies and reading. He spent a lot of time in bookstores and was a die-hard fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was preceded in death by his father; and brother-in-law Stephen Dauw.

He is survived by wife Genie McKee; son Aaron C. Short; mother Hazel Short; stepchildren Michal Hodson, Natalie Egan and Christopher McKee; brother Michael R. Short; sisters Marilyn G. Dauw and Monica E. Brown; grandchildren Bayli, Ledger, Liam and Lennon; and six step-grandchildren.
