RED FLAG WARNING – The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued a Red Flag Warning for Wise County until 7 p.m. today due to critical fire conditions. According to the county’s burn ban, no outside burning is allowed today. It is expected to be sunny and windy today with a high around 74 degrees with south southwest wind 15 to 25 mph with gusts as high as 35 mph. Fire departments have already been busy responding to grass fires. Last night around 10 p.m., Boyd, Cottondale, Paradise, Rhome and Newark fire departments responded to a 10-acre grass fire on County Road 4591. The fire was reported contained at 11:19.

CLOSING ARGUMENTS – Both the state and the defense rested and closed yesterday in the murder trial of former Wise County resident Jake Abel. Closing arguments in the trial, which began two weeks ago, are scheduled for this morning before the jury begins deliberations. The case is being heard in 271st District Court in Decatur.

UTILITY ASSISTANCE – Wise Area Relief Mission will be setting appointments for residents and clients needing assistance with utility bills today. Prospective clients are required to call WARM between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Face to face interviews will be held Feb. 2 and 7. “That will give us time to prepare,” said WARM Executive Director Rene Ashmore. “When they call, they need their bill in hand so we can get details, due date, if there is a disconnection notice, name on the account and account number.”

TAX PREPARATION – Area residents with low incomes can get free help preparing and filing their taxes. Volunteers will be at the Decatur Public Library 3 to 6:30 p.m. every Monday afternoon from Feb. 5 through April 16. Bring the following information: W-2, 1099 forms (1099-INT, DIV, A, B, MISC, R, SSA), unemployment, pensions, etc.; any forms indicating federal income tax that is already paid; and receipts or canceled checks if you itemize deductions. Please bring a picture ID for yourself (and your spouse) and Social Security cards or other official documentation for you and your dependents. SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS – Weatherford College has opened its online scholarship application system for 2018-19 academic year scholarships provided by the WC Foundation. To start the application process, students should visit wc.edu/scholarships and use their existing “MyWC” login credentials to enter the system. Students must have completed the overall WC application to apply for scholarships. The deadline to apply is March 24. The scholarships will begin in the fall 2018 semester, and many awards will renew for spring 2019, pending fall GPAs.

DADDY DAUGHTER DANCE – The Decatur Junior Woman’s Club will hold the 12th annual Daddy Daughter Dance Saturday at the Decatur Conference Center. This year’s theme is the Mad Hatter’s Ball.
