BOYD COUNCIL OKS WATER RATE HIKE – The Boyd City Council Tuesday approved a 10 percent increase to residential and commercial water rates and 50 percent hike to commercial sewer rates after a second public hearing. The rate increases will raise the average residential water bill for a homeowner using 4,500 gallons $4.60 to $51.10. With the average sewer bill remaining the same at $33.20, the average monthly total residential water/wastewater bill will be $84.30. The average commercial customer consuming 12,000 gallons of water will see a $14 increase to $153.60. The commercial sewer bill will increase $26 to $78. The average monthly commercial water/wastewater bill will be $217.60. The increases will go into effect in six to eight weeks.

APRIL WEATHER WRAP – Rainfall was well below normal last month, with only 1.16 inches of rain recorded by weather watcher Doyle Green in Decatur. The average rainfall amount for the month is 3.31 inches. For the year, we’ve received 9.3 inches, nearly two inches behind the 11.12 inches we normally see during the first four months of the year. Temperatures in the month ranged from a high of 92 on April 13 to a low of 28 on April 8.

CHANCE FOR STORMS – There’s a slight chance for storms this afternoon with the chances increasing overnight, according to the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth. Some storms could be severe. Temperatures will reach the mid 80s today with wind gusts up to 30 mph and high humidity.

LEGAL ADVICE CLINIC – Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas will offer a free clinic on civil legal matters including family law, wills, landlord/tenant, public benefits, federal tax, and housing 5-7 p.m. Thursday in the basement of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur, 104 S. Miller St. The clinic is open to low-income applicants by appointment or on a walk-in basis, and is held on the first Thursday of every month. Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas is a nonprofit law firm that helps qualified, low-income Texans with civil legal cases only. Interested applicants may call 940-383-1406 for information or to determine eligibility.

COUNTYWIDE YOUTH ART SHOW – The sixth annual Wise County Art Association Youth Art Show is 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Decatur Conference Center. Students may enter up to three pieces of art. Cost is $5 per entry, and registration is 3-6 p.m. Friday. There are three divisions – 2D, 3D and photography – and four age groups for artists ages 6 to 18. Cash prizes will be awarded, and three seniors will be presented $1,500 scholarships. WCAA members will also showcase their art at the conference center in conjunction with the youth show.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER – Community Church, 2840 U.S. 380 in Decatur, is hosting a come-and-go prayer event Thursday honoring the National Day of Prayer. The church will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will feature prayer stations. This year’s theme is “Unity.”

FARMING EVENT – Local food producers in the Decatur area are invited to join FARFA and Grow North Texas in a day of learning Thursday at Black Creek Farm, 2324 Old Decatur Road in Decatur. The event includes a workshop on legal and business issues for farmers, a listening session for producers, and grassroots advocacy training. The event runs from 3-8 p.m.

GALA TICKETS AVAILABLE – The 2018 Decatur Education Foundation Gala is 6 p.m. May 10, at the Decatur Conference Center. Those who will be honored include: Class of 2018 Top 10 graduates, Teacher of the Year, J.E. and Betty Carson, Athletic Hall of Fame members, Foundation grant recipients, DISD retirees and Foundation donors. FUNERALS – Memorial service for Lydia “Marie” Cox, 78, is 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Central Baptist Church in Bowie. White Family Funeral Home in Bowie is handling arrangements.

SERVICE for Billy Jennings, 69, of Newark is pending at Greenwood Funeral Home.

FUNERAL for Helen Caraway Russell, 74, of Grapevine and formerly of Bridgeport is 10 a.m. Saturday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Bridgeport. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral.

SERVICE for Bill McRae, 74, of Bridgeport is 2 p.m. Saturday at Willow Point Cemetery in Bridgeport.

SERVICE for Robert Wickham, 89, of Runaway Bay is pending at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.
