PATRIOT DAY PROGRAM – The Wise County Veterans Group will hold a Patriot Day Program at 10:30 a.m. today at the Wise County Veterans Park. Guest speaker will be Robb Hawkins of Decatur, with Honor Guard provided by the Decatur Fire Department and music provided by Jennifer Ward. The program will honor first responders – police, fire and medical personnel. Representatives from all communities within Wise County including first responders are invited. The event is held each year to remember the 2,977 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

NORTHWEST ISD TO CONTACT STATE BOARD – Northwest ISD trustees yesterday voted to file a complaint with the State Board of Educator Certification for the abandonment of contract by a pair of elementary teachers, Kelly Sosa and Kasie Fox. The action was recommended by administration after the teachers tendered late resignations.

NORTHWEST ISD TO LOOK INTO TAX RATE ELECTION – As part of its district improvement plan for 2018-19, Northwest ISD Superintendent Ryder Warren said the district will look into the need for a tax rate election. The district could make a decision in the spring to pursue the election that would allow it to raise the maintenance and operations tax rate above the current $1.04 to as high as $1.17.

MAROON OUT – Bridgeport Main Street will host “Maroon Out” Girls Night Out 5-7 p.m. Thursday in downtown Bridgeport. Come sip, shop, dine and wear your maroon for a chance to win a $200 cash prize. Also, the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce will hold ribbon cuttings for Rustic Rose at 5 p.m. and Reilly Chance at 5:30 p.m. Call Bridgeport Main Street at 940-683-3400.

POLITICAL FORUM – Several Democratic candidates vying for the top state offices are slated to make appearances in Decatur Wednesday at the Texas Democratic Women of Rural North Texas forum. Gubernatorial candidate Lupe Valdez, who is running against incumbent Greg Abbott, is scheduled to appear, along with Lieutenant Governor candidate Mike Collier, who is trying to unseat incumbent Dan Patrick. The forum, which will feature a question-and-answer session, starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Decatur Conference Center. The lineup of statewide candidates also includes Kim Olson, who is running for agriculture commissioner, and Kathy Cheng, who is running for the Texas Supreme Court. Greg Sagan, who is running for U.S. House District 13, and Kevin Lopez, who is bidding for the Texas Senate District 30 seat, will also appear.

LIBRARY EVENT – Kids of all ages are invited to join the after school fun at the Chico Public Library 4-5 p.m. today. Participants will use circle looms to create friendship bracelets. Call Michelle at (940) 644-2330.

VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE – Today’s volleyball games include Northwest at Denton, Decatur at Midlothian Heritage, Godley at Bridgeport, Brock at Boyd, Paradise at Millsap, Alvord at Valley View and Chico at Perrin-Whitt.

BOYD TO CONSIDER TAX RATE, BUDGET – The Boyd City Council will look to pass a tax rate of 59.9999 cents for the fiscal year 2018-19 and its annual budget at 6:30 tonight.

PARADISE HISTORICAL SOCIETY – The regular bi-monthly meeting of the Paradise Historical Society is 7 tonight at the Paradise Methodist Church Annex building at 304 S. Oak St. Donna Weeden will share her research of the 1870’s outlaw Sam Bass and his gang who roamed and hid out in Denton, Parker, Wise and Cook counties between 1870-78. The presentation will be followed by refreshments and a business meeting. The public is invited.
