CATTLE HAULER OVERTURNS – A cattle trailer hauling 99 head of cattle overturned on U.S. 380 at U.S. 81/287 in Decatur around 6:30 this morning. Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins said the 18-wheeler was westbound on U.S. 380 and was attempting to take the exit to northbound U.S. 81/287, but the driver was going too fast, and the truck and trailer turned over, skidding on its side until it hit a guardrail. The driver, Mason Heiman, 22, of Effingham, Kan., was taken to Wise Health System with a possible broken ankle. Local cowboys assisted officers in offloading the surviving cattle onto trailers. At least one cow, a calf, escaped and headed back toward town. The calf was still on the loose as Update was going to press. The wreck had the northbound U.S. 81/287 ramp closed and also caused a second, minor wreck.
