NORTHWEST TRUSTEES OK BUDGET – Northwest ISD trustees approved a $287 million spending plan for the 2018-19 fiscal year Monday night. The district plans to use $12.4 million out of reserves to balance the budget. The district will levy a tax rate of $1.49 per $100 evaluation. The district’s estimated taxable property increased by $1.4 billion from $14.097 billion to $15.498 billion.

STATE AWARDS – The Wise County Messenger received two first-place awards at the 2018 Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest this past weekend. Racey Burden and Brian Knox took home first place for feature writing. Richard Greene, Joe Duty and Mack Thweatt earned a first-place award for excellence in sports coverage. The Messenger earned three second-place awards: Joe Duty for sports photography, Racey Burden and Kristen Tribe for editorial, and Joe Duty for feature photography. The staff received a third-place award for Blue Moon section, and Joy Carrico earned third place for page design. Knox and Tribe placed fourth in news writing. The Messenger finished third in the sweepstakes competition in the division.

AIR GUITAR COMPETITION – Kids 11 and under can make a guitar and participate in the #CPLRocks air guitar competition at the Chico Public Library 11 a.m.-noon today. Call 940-644-2330.

RED CROSS MEETING – The Wise County Red Cross Disaster Action Team meets at 7 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Street Coffee Bar in downtown Decatur.

BRISKET SALE – The Greenwood Masonic Lodge No. 779 is cooking briskets for the July 4 holiday. Cost is $60 per brisket. To order call 940-255-2782 or 817-992-4180. Briskets will be ready to be picked up between 8:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday.

MEDICAID 101 – Decatur Medical Lodge will hold a Medicaid 101 session with attorney C. Dan Campbell 5:30 p.m. today. He will discuss Medicaid and long term care, Medicaid planning “ins and outs” and 11 myths about Medicaid. RSVP to Denise at 940-626-2813.

DONATIONS SOUGHT FOR BURN VICTIM – The Decatur school district is collecting donations to benefit a student who was badly burned last week. Nick Scott, who will be a 7th grader at the schools, was injured last Tuesday in an accident at home. He received severe burns over 50 percent of his body and is at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. The school is collecting gift cards for gas, groceries and restaurants as well as snacks that would be easily accessible for the family as they spend time with him at the hospital. Donations will be accepted at the DISD Administration Office 8 a.m.-4 p.m. through today. Donations will be delivered to the family at Parkland Hospital on Wednesday. DRUM THE BEAT – Alvord Public Library’s Summer Reading Program for Wednesday will be “Drum the Beat.” Children will listen to the book, “Drum Dream Girl,” and then will make their own drums from (mostly) recycled materials. All library programs are held at Alvord City Hall, 215 W. Elm Street, Alvord, and run from 10-11 a.m.

WISE COUNTY HISTORICAL GROUPS MEET – The monthly Wise County Historical Society Inc. meeting is at noon Thursday, and the quarterly Wise County Historical Commission meeting is at 1 p.m. Thursday. Both meetings will be held in the Wise County Heritage Museum, 1602 S. Trinity St. in Decatur. Lunch will be served, so RSVP to the museum at 940-627-5586 by 3 p.m. Wednesday. Speaker this month will be Mike Bell of the East Side Elementary School Alumni Association who will speak about the organization and the activities they sponsor.
