DON’T SHOOT FIREWORKS – Due to elevated fire danger, the county’s burn ban is in effect. County officials yesterday announced they were including fireworks in the burn ban. Fireworks can still be bought and sold in the county. Temperatures yesterday reached 101 degrees in Decatur, and that’s also the forecasted high for today. High temperatures in the mid-90s are expected Wednesday through the end of the week with rain chances increasing by this weekend.

TEACHER WORKSHOP – The Wise County Extension Office will hold a Teacher Workshop 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. July 18 at Weatherford College Wise County. The hands-on workshop will include information about STEM, gardening, life cycles and water and soil science. Cost is $40, and participants will earn six CPE hours. VETERANS MUSEUM OPEN WEDNESDAY – The Veterans Museum in Bridgeport will be open on Wednesday for the public and for all veterans. Tours will be available.

FREEDOM FEST – Grace Fellowship in Paradise will host its Freedom Fest at 6 p.m. today. The event is free for the community. Food will be sold at 13 food trucks with live music and inflatables for children. Fireworks begin after dark.

LIBRARIES ROCK – Children ages 5-11 are invited to join the Libraries Rock summer program at the Chico Public Library 11 a.m.-noon today. Participants will learn about a variety of DIY music instruments and create their own Hawaiian uli uli. Call 940-644-2330.

FREE FLAGS – Decatur Medical Lodge will be giving away free U.S. flags 2-4 p.m. today for the Independence Day holiday.

HANCOCK LETTER – The original transcript of John Hancock’s July 4, 1776, letter to the Maryland Convention ordering their military to march to Philadelphia to defend the common cause will be on display at the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce/Heritage Museum 10 a.m.-4 p.m. today.

SUMMER READING RETURNS NEXT WEEK – The Alvord Public Library will hold no Summer Reading Program Wednesday due to the city holiday. On July 11, programming will resume with “Let’s Make Music.”

HOLIDAY CLOSURE – The Wise County Animal Shelter will close at 2 p.m. today and will be closed Wednesday for the Independence Day holiday. The shelter will reopen at normal hours on Thursday.

JULY 4TH CELEBRATION – Still Waters Retreat will host a 4th of July celebration 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday at 403 County Road 3672 in south Wise County. The event will feature a pancake breakfast 7:30-9 a.m., an opening/flag retirement ceremony at 9 a.m. and events throughout the day including live entertainment, car show, swimming, vendors, games and food. Cost is $10 per carload.
