FORMER OFFICER KILLED IN WRECK – Former Decatur Police officer Richard Hale was killed in a two-vehicle wreck yesterday afternoon near Decatur. Hale was driving a Chevrolet Impala on Farm Road 51 north of Decatur around 1:30 p.m. when he collided with an 18-wheeler driven by James Pollard, 55, of Chico. Hale died at the scene. Pollard did not sustain any life-threatening injuries. Pollard said he was driving south on FM 51 when the car swerved into his lane, resulting in the head-on crash. “I thought I was going to end up dying,” Pollard said. “All of a sudden that [car] cut right into me.” FM 51 was shut down in both directions following the wreck. Funeral for Hale is pending at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

1 FLOWN FROM DECATUR WRECK – A Toyota Sequoia collided head-on with a Chevrolet truck on Business U.S. 380 in Decatur around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Decatur officer Royce Gastineau said the driver of the Toyota was westbound and crossed into the eastbound lane of traffic, striking the Chevrolet. Gastineau said eye-witnesses stated the driver of the Toyota was speeding and swerving moments before the wreck. The driver of the Toyota was flown by PHI to Medical City Denton. The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to a local hospital. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

TRAFFIC ALERT – Oncor will be working on equipment this morning which will affect traffic in the Chico area. Farm Road 1810 just west of Chico at County Road 1749 will be shut down briefly starting at 9 a.m. to change out some equipment. The work requires a crane. Traffic will be reduced to one lane once the crane and crews are set up safely. Oncor anticipates the work will take four hours.

BAND BOOSTER MEETING – The Decatur Band Boosters will hold its final meeting of the school year at 6 tonight at the Decatur High School band hall.

RETIRED EDUCATOR MEETING – The Wise County Retired School Personnel will meet Tuesday, May 15, at the Decatur Conference Center. Lunch reservations must be made by Sunday by calling 940-575-2341. The program will include installation of new officers and bingo. There are no summer meetings.

PLANT SALE – Decatur FFA will hold a Mother’s Day plant sale, the last one of the school year, 3:30-6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at the DHS greenhouse.

COMMUNITY COALITION MEETING – The Wise County Community Coalition meets at noon Monday at Pizza Hut in Decatur. The topic will be Juneteenth, and Emily Pivoda with Star Council will be guest speaker.

BRISKET SALE – The Greenwood Masonic Lodge will be selling 40 briskets for the Memorial Day holiday. Cost is $60 each. To reserve a brisket call 817-992-4180 or 940-255-2782. Briskets will be ready for pick up at the pavilion in Greenwood 9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 26.
