JURY DELIVERS 50-YEAR SENTENCE FOR EVADING – A Fort Worth man who sped through the parking lot of a retail center the week before Christmas last year in an attempt to flee from an officer trying to make a traffic stop was found guilty Wednesday of evading arrest with a vehicle and sentenced to 50 years in prison. David Ray Baker, 45, was arrested Dec. 18 after he sped away from a Wise County Sheriff’s deputy, driving through the four-way stop sign in the parking lot between Cici’s Pizza and Tractor Supply in Decatur. Jurors watched video from the pursuing officer, which showed Baker narrowly missing hitting at least two vehicles before driving through a fence behind Tractor Supply and crashing into a creek bed. Baker then attempted to run on foot before being caught by officers. Officers testified that they found a small plastic bag of what was later determined to be methamphetamine that had been discarded by Baker as he ran. During the punishment phase of the trial, Assistant District Attorney Patrick Berry presented evidence of four previous felony convictions Baker had received over a span of 13 years which resulted in a total of 62 years of prison time. Due to his previous convictions, once he was found guilty in the latest offense, Baker faced a punishment range of 25 years to life in prison. Because the jury found that Baker’s pickup could have caused serious bodily injury or death during the short pursuit, he must serve at least half his sentence – 25 years – before he would become eligible for parole.
