BOND ISSUE VOTED DOWN – For the second straight May, voters in the Alvord school district voted down a school bond issue. Saturday’s result was 199 votes against to 104 votes for a $5.1 million bond issue which would have replaced a nearly 70-year-old gym and music room and added an elementary classroom while improving student security with enclosed connections to existing buildings.

BOYD NARROWLY APPROVES MDD – Boyd residents approved a Municipal Development District by a vote of 47-42. The creation of the MDD will move a half-cent of sales currently used for property tax reduction into the district to fund capital improvements.

ESD TAX INCREASE DEFEATED – A ballot issue to increase the Wise County Emergency Services District No. 1 tax rate to a maximum of 10 cents was defeated by a vote of 137 to 112. The district’s current rate is 3 cents per $100 evaluation. The district planned to only levy a 6-cent tax for the next two years if it had passed.

SLIDELL ACTOR TAKES TOP HONOR – Slidell senior Shelby Johnson was named Best Actor in the Class A UIL one-act play competition for his performance as Paganini in the production by the same name. Sydney Keating earned honorable mention all-star cast. Slidell’s Stone Coston won the state title in computer applications at the UIL academics meet, and Tristyn Talamantes won the bronze medal in computer apps. Warren Johnson was sixth in the event. Layton Shelton earned a bronze medal in news writing. He was sixth in theatrical design marketing. Paradise’s Hailey Holt finished fifth in news writing. Bridgeport’s Jacob Richey garnered fifth in editorial writing.

DEALERSHIP MERGER – AgPower Texas, the John Deere dealership in Rhome, has merged with four other companies to form United Ag and Turf. The new company will have 29 John Deere dealerships throughout Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. The new dealership group will be headquartered in Bryan and, in addition to Rhome, will include dealerships in Gainesville and Weatherford. The name change at the Rhome and Gainesville stores was effective May 3. AgPower’s headquarters had been in McKinney.

KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP – Bridgeport ISD will hold its kindergarten roundup beginning today. Registration will take place at Bridgeport Elementary through Friday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Parents must bring the child’s birth certificate, social security card, immunization records and proof of residence. Parents must also have a photo ID.

SCV MEETING – The Sons of Confederate Veterans meet 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wesley Center of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur. Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins is guest speaker.

DIABETES CLASSES – Total Diabetes Care at Wise Health System will hold diabetes education classes in Bridgeport today. The classes are intended to help those with diabetes better understand and manage the disease. The beginner class will be offered at 3 p.m., and the advanced class will be offered at 4 p.m. Both classes will be held at the Wise Clinical Care, 2202 U.S. 380 No. 112. Classes are free and will be taught by Dick Gilley RN, CCRN, CDE. No RSVP required. Call Gilley at 940-626-1890.

CHAMBER LUNCH – Wise County Chamber of Commerce May luncheon is 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. today at the Boyd Community Center. Captain Wes Wallace with the Wise County Sheriff’s Office will speak about Crimestoppers and Neighborhood Watch programs. Lunch is $15 at the door, or you can prepay online for $12 per person at wisecountychamber.com under “Event Tickets.”

FUNERALS – Services for Arlon Morris, 85, of Chico and Clinton Dennis, 89, formerly of Bridgeport are pending at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.

GRAVESIDE service for Joseph A.R. “Little Joe” Anderson, 88, of Bridgeport is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at West Bridgeport Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Hawkins-Bridgeport.

SERVICE for Anita St. Claire, 76, of Coppell, formerly of Wise County, is pending at Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.

MEMORIAL service for Michael Reason, 58, of Decatur is 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Jones Family Funeral Home in Decatur.
