JONES NAMED CAPTAIN – Former Bridgeport and TCU standout Colin Jones was named one of six captains for the Carolina Panthers to start the season. When the Carolina Panthers open the NFL season Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, Jones will be the Panthers’ first special teams captain since 2012.
VOLLEYBALL ACTION – The Boyd Lady Yellowjackets start their bid for a fourth straight district title at 4 p.m. today with the 7-3A opener at Tolar. Paradise will also open 7-3A, bringing in Peaster. Northwest, Alvord and Chico also open their leagues. Northwest will travel to Lake Dallas. Alvord will go to Forestburg. Chico welcomes in Graford for a 10 a.m. match Saturday. In non-district action, Decatur will play Wichita Falls and Bridgeport heads to Graham today.
ASSAULT OF EAGLE SUMMIT – One of the state’s toughest cross country races returns to Decatur High School Saturday with the Assault of Eagle Summit. The races begin at 8 a.m. with the varsity girls 4A and under race.
FIREFIGHTERS TO TAKE PART IN CLIMB – Three local firefighters – Ashlee Schmitz and Shane White of Decatur and Dawnelle Burns of Runaway Bay and Lake Bridgeport – will take part in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Renaissance Tower Saturday. The three firefighters will climb a total of 110 flights of stairs in full gear.
MORE RAIN EXPECTED – Today’s forecast includes a 70 percent chance of rain, mainly after 1 p.m. Rain chances decrease to 50 percent overnight and Saturday. Rainfall totals from the past couple of days include 1.61 inches in Decatur, 1.2 in Bridgeport, 0.25 in Alvord and 0.1 in Greenwood.
COMMUNITY COALITION – The Wise County Community Coalition meets noon Monday at Pizza Hut in Decatur. Shawne Ware, executive director of CASA of Wise and Jack Counties is guest speaker.
LIBRARY HOURS CHANGE – Beginning Saturday, the Alvord Public Library will change its Saturday hours to 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Weekday hours will remain the same.
MASONIC LODGE BREAKFAST – Greenwood Masonic Lodge No. 779 will host its quarterly community breakfast 7-9 a.m. Saturday. Biscuits and sausage gravy, bacon, coffee, milk, orange juice and pancakes will be served. Breakfast is free but donations will be accepted.
PATRIOT DAY PROGRAM – The Wise County Veterans Group will hold a Patriot Day Program at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Wise County Veterans Park. Guest speaker will be Robb Hawkins of Decatur, with Honor Guard provided by the Decatur Fire Department and music provided by Jennifer Ward. The program will honor first responders – police, fire and medical personnel. Representatives from all communities within Wise County including first responders are invited.
COMMISSIONERS TO ADOPT BUDGET – Wise County commissioners plan to adopt the budget and tax rate for fiscal year 2019 at their meeting Monday. They also plan to discuss the Weatherford College Wise County budget and adopt the college branch campus maintenance tax for FY ’19. They will consider the 3-2-1 tax prepayment discount program, suggested in last week’s public hearing, and will also discuss the job description and timeline for hiring a new public works director. The meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the third-floor conference room of the Wise County Courthouse. Two public hearings on the archive funds for the county clerk and district clerk will be held prior to the start of the regular meeting at 8:30 and 8:45 a.m., respectively.
TOWN HALL MEETING – Kevin Lopez, Bridgeport city councilman and candidate for Texas Senate District 30, will host a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Bridgeport Lions Club. Wise County residents are invited to hear his plan for Senate District 30 and share their concerns over the district.
ALVORD WATERMELON FESTIVAL – The Alvord Watermelon Festival is this weekend at Elm Creek Park. Activities begin tonight with a cornhole and washer tournament and a 42 tournament. Saturday’s events include a breakfast, pageant, antique car show and shine, bingo, an IBCA barbecue competition, live music and more. The Mike Watts Memorial Scholarship Fish Fry will be held Saturday evening. A full schedule was featured in this week’s All Around Wise.
DECATUR FARMERS MARKET – The Decatur Farmers Market will reopen 8 a.m. Saturday at the Wise County Fairgrounds with a selection of fall produce along with local honey, baked goods, jams, pickles, farm raised beef, free range eggs and artisan goods.
MUSICAL PERFORMANCE – The singing group Psalms Journey will perform at two local churches Sunday: Mount Zion Baptist Church at 11 a.m. and Balsora Baptist Church at 6 p.m.
