VETERAN’S REMAINS RETURNED AFTER 74 YEARS – The remains of Army Sergeant James Kenneth Park have returned home 74 years after he was reported missing in action during a battle in the Hurtgen Forest in Germany in Nov. 1944. Park’s only child, Bridgeport resident Kay Crawford, stood with tears of joy as she witnessed the procession 74 years in the making Thursday morning at DFW International Airport. Park was 20 years old when he was reported missing. His unidentified remains were recovered and buried in a civilian cemetery near the forest before being reburied in Belgium in 1946. On Saturday, after the funeral in Bridgeport, Park will be buried in Barry, near Corsicana. Read more in this weekend’s Wise County Messenger.

VOTING REMAINS STEADY – Another 1,394 people voted early on Thursday, bringing the four-day total to 7,452. That represents about a 100-vote increase from the first four days of early voting in the 2016 presidential election. Early voting for the Nov. 6 election continues 8 a.m.-5 p.m. today and Saturday at four early voting locations: the Wise County Elections Office, 200 S. Trinity St. in Decatur; Alvord City Hall, 215 W. Elm; the Boyd Community Center, 420 E. Morton Ave.; and the Bridgeport Law Enforcement Center, 1000 Thompson St.

FOOTBALL FRIDAY – Chico will celebrate homecoming when they host Olney tonight at Dragon Stadium. Other games include Alvord at Linsdey, Bowie at Boyd, Bridgeport at Vernon, Mineral Wells at Decatur and Pilot Point at Paradise.

ART BEAT – The Greater Wise Arts Alliance and Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce is celebrating all types of artists and their work Saturday at the Art Beat festival on Halsell Street. See street performers, artists’ live demos and sample local wine. There will be special activities for the kids, and downtown restaurants will be open.

MEDICATION EDUCATION – Wise Health System in Decatur will host a Pharmacy Fair and Medication Education Day 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the WHS East Campus Cafeteria. Bring your medications for a one-on-one review with a pharmacist. Other health information will also be available. Decatur Police Department will also be on site to accept medications for destruction.

5TH QUARTER – First Baptist Church Decatur is hosting 5th Quarter for all 7th-12th graders immediately following the Eagles vs. Mineral Wells home football game. There will be free Chick-fil-a sandwiches, Scoop Shack ice cream and prizes, including a pair of Apple Air Pods. The event lasts until 12:30 a.m.

MOVIE UNDER THE STARS – City Church of Decatur will hold Movie Under the Stars with a showing of Hotel Transylvania 3 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Costumes are welcome. It will also feature a Black Creek Farm food truck and popcorn.

TRUNK OR TREAT – The First United Methodist Church in Decatur will hold Trunk or Treat 5-7 p.m. Saturday in the MAC parking lot. It will include a trunk contest, Sparky the Fire Dog, a bounce house and a Decatur Fire Truck. It will also feature a Teal Pumpkin participant for children with food allergies.

DAV YARD SALE – The Disabled American Veterans will hold a yard sale at the DAV Hall on Farm Road 51 South in Decatur today and Saturday.

CEMETERY MEETING – The Pella Cemetery meeting and lunch is Sunday. Lunch is at 12:30 p.m. followed by a business meeting and visiting. The cemetery is located off of Farm Road 1655, seven miles east of Alvord.

SELF DEFENSE CLASS – Wise Hope Shelter and Crisis Center has partnered with Peak Performance in Decatur to host a free self defense class for women and girls age 13 and over from 2-4 p.m. Saturday. BOO BASH – Boo Bash on the Decatur Square is 3-7 p.m. Sunday. Festivities will include a trunk or treat, dog costume contest, car decorating contest, bounce houses and live music. Proceeds will go to the Wise County Animal Shelter.

SPOOKTACULAR FALL FESTIVAL – Bridgeport Parks and Recreation’s Spooktacular Fall Festival is 5:30-8 p.m. Saturday at Bridgeport Community Center, 1102 Lawdwin Avenue. The free event includes inflatables, games, cotton candy, hot dogs, popcorn, balloon animals and lots of candy. There will also be a costume contest hosted by Bridgeport Main Street.

CEMETERY WALKING TOUR – The Wise County Genealogical Society will sponsor a Cemetery Walking Tour at Decatur’s Oaklawn Cemetery 1-2 p.m. Saturday. Narrated life stories of five Decatur pioneers will be presented. Cost is $5 per person or $10 per family.

FUNERAL for James Park, 94, is 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Bridgeport with burial at Dresden Cemetery near Corsicana. Family visitation 5-7 tonight at Hawkins-Bridgeport. He was the father of Kay Crawford of Bridgeport.
