BRIDGEPORT RECEIVES TRAIL GRANT – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission yesterday awarded the city of Bridgeport $20,000 towards the Bridgeport Adventure Park. The project includes renovation of 0.13 of a mile of existing trail and a new park entrance sign. Bridgeport received one of 19 grants totaling $3.38 million from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission for motorized and non-motorized recreational trail-related projects across the state.
GRADUATIONS – Alvord, Boyd, Chico, Decatur and Slidell high schools will all hold graduation today. Alvord’s graduation is at 7 p.m. in the AHS gym. Boyd’s graduation is at 7:30 p.m. at J.G. Cartwright Field at Yellowjacket Stadium. Chico’s graduation is 7 p.m. in the CHS gym. Decatur’s graduation is at 7 p.m. at the University of North Texas Coliseum in Denton. Slidell’s graduation is 7 p.m. at Slidell High School. Paradise High School will hold graduation at 2 p.m. Saturday at Weatherford High School.
LADY EAGLES ONE WIN FROM STATE – The Decatur Lady Eagles softball team won the first game of their region final series against Emory Rains 9-0 yesterday at Prosper. Every Decatur player had a hit in the win. Junior Reagan Chism threw a complete game shutout, giving up just three hits in seven innings. Game 2 is back at Prosper at 5 p.m. Saturday. Game 3, if necessary, would immediately follow. The winner advances to the state tournament next week in Austin.
MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS – Several Memorial Day events are planned for Wise County beginning this weekend. At 11 a.m. Saturday, the Rhome Veterans Group will host a Memorial Day program at the Rhome Veterans Park. Keynote speaker will be State Rep. Pat Fallon. The Wise County Veterans Group will host its annual Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Wise County Veterans Memorial Park in Decatur. State Rep. Phil King will be guest speaker. The Alvord Area Veterans will hold a Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. Monday at the Alvord Veterans Park.
MEMORIAL DAY CLOSINGS – All Wise County administrative offices will be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. The Wise County Animal Shelter will also be closed Monday. The Decatur dumpsite will be closed Monday. Boyd and Cottondale dumpsites will be closed Wednesday.
TRASH SCHEDULE – Trash collection in the city of Decatur will run on its normal schedule next week, including Monday.
FORAGE FIELD TOUR – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present a program on how different herbicide and fertilizer applications affect Bermuda grass forage production Thursday, May 31. Registration is 8:30 a.m. Program begins at 9. Cost is $10 and provides 2 CEU’s for Pesticide Applicator License. Call the Extension office at 940-627-334 to sign up.
GOSPEL OPRY – The monthly Gospel Opry Sing-Along Program is 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Wise County Heritage Museum, 1602 S. Trinity St. in Decatur. Admission is free. A love offering will be accepted toward the expenses of the museum.
HEROES FOR HUNGER 5K – The Heroes for Hunger 5K and Fun Run is Saturday morning at Chisholm Trail Middle School in Rhome. The one-mile fun run begins at 8 and the 5K at 8:30. Registration starts at 7:15. The cost is $20 for the fun run and $35 for the 5K.
FFA PLANT SALE – Decatur FFA will hold its final greenhouse sale 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the high school. Annuals, perennials, hanging baskets and interior foliage will be for sale. Everything priced to sale quickly.
YOUTH RUMMAGE SALE – Wise County Cowboy Church will hold a Youth Rummage Sale 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Wise County Fairgrounds. Proceeds will benefit the Youth Camp Fund.
