BRIDGEPORT INCREASES WATER RATES – Bridgeport City Council voted Monday to increase the city’s water/wastewater rates. The city’s base water charge will increase by $10 except for those in the West Wise rate class, and the first 3,000 gallons will no longer be included in the base price. Customers using more than 3,000 gallons per month will see a 5 percent water rate increase. The wastewater base charge will increase by $6, and the rate classes will see a 10 percent increase. The rate changes begin in April and will be reflected on bills in May. See more on rate changes in the midweek Wise County Messenger.

MARIJUANA FOUND IN TRUNK – Officers confiscated 20 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop this weekend. Department of Public Safety spokesman Lt. Lonny Haschel said a southbound passenger car was stopped for a traffic violation on U.S. 81/287 in the area of U.S. 380 in Decatur around 10:45 a.m. Saturday. During the stop, the DPS trooper requested a Wise County K-9 unit respond to the location. Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said the canine alerted on the vehicle, and marijuana was found in several scent-proof bags in the trunk of the car. The driver of the car, Tayler Daine Alley, 26, of Jacksonville, Fla., was arrested for possession of marijuana 5-50 pounds. Akin said Alley was traveling from California back to Florida when he was stopped.

PARADISE HISTORICAL SOCIETY – Paradise Historical Society will meet at 7 tonight at the Paradise United Methodist Church, 304 S. Oak St. Guest speaker Carmelina Holloway will share experiences from her time as a movie extra on the set of “Giant” which was filmed on location near Marfa in 1956. FARM EQUIPMENT AUCTION – The Chisholm Trail Antique Farm Equipment Club will hold its spring farm equipment consignment auction at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Wise County Fairgrounds.

SCV MEETING – The Sons of Confederate Veterans meet 7 tonight at the First United Methodist Church of Decatur Wesley Center.

STORM DAMAGE BRUSH PICK UP – Due to the recent storms, the City of Bridgeport will conduct a storm damage brush pick up around Bridgeport today, Wednesday and Thursday. During this time, residents are asked to place their brush next to the curb and city staff will come pick it up. For this one time only collection event, brush does not need to be bundled or cut to short lengths. Visit the city’s Facebook page to see when the city is scheduled to pick up brush in your area. SIREN TEST – The Chico Volunteer Fire Department will test the emergency warning sirens at 7 tonight, weather permitting. It will consist of three long blasts with a 10-second delay between each blast.

FUNERAL for Jearene Hightower, 64, of Bridgeport is 2 p.m. Thursday at Hawkins Chapel in Bridgeport with burial at East Bridgeport Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
