INCREASED COURTHOUSE SECURITY – Wise County commissioners Monday approved a plan for increased security at the courthouse in Decatur as recommended by Chief Deputy Craig Johnson and Sheriff Lane Akin. The proposed plan, as presented by Johnson, would move the main courthouse entrance to the ramp, which leads into the basement, at the corner of Main and Trinity Streets. The four glass doors would be locked and entrance would be restricted to card access only. Johnson said they would also start using a metal detector, which is already in the courthouse, and would purchase an X-ray machine to be used at the basement entrance. An improved camera system will be installed, and two additional deputies will be added to security staff. Precinct 2 Commissioner Kevin Burns resisted adding personnel, but Johnson reminded him a security upgrade would be difficult without additional people. Johnson requested three deputies, but the motion approved by commissioners included only two. Read more in the midweek Wise County Messenger on newsstands Wednesday.
