ESD BOARD TO CONSIDER TAX INCREASE – The Wise County ESD No. 1 board will meet at 5:45 p.m. today at the station in Boyd to call an election for May 6 to raise the tax rate. The board is planning on asking voters to approve a 7-cent hike from the current 3 cents per $100 of evaluation to the state limit of 10 cents. While seeking the increase to 10 cents, the ESD 1 Board President Ken Murray stressed the district plans to only levy a tax of 6 cents in 2018 and possibly raise it to 8 cents in the next two to three years if needed.

COALITION MEETING – The Wise County Community Coalition meeting is noon Monday, Feb. 12, at Pizza Hut in Decatur. This month’s presentation is on Black History. Call Mike Bell at 940-627-9082.

NEW ESD PROPOSED – Boonsville community leaders are seeking to establish Emergency Services District No. 2, which would help fund the Boonsville/Balsora Volunteer Fire Department. Organizers will hold a second public meeting 3 p.m. Saturday at the Boonsville Community Center to continue the signature collection, which is required to get the initiative on the November ballot. The group needs 100 signatures of registered voters who are real property owners in the proposed district.

RELAY BAKE SALE – Carolyn’s Cookie Monster’s Relay for Life Team will host a bake sale Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Legend Bank. Chocolate dipped strawberries will be sold at both Decatur and Alvord locations for $20/dozen. All proceeds go to American Cancer Society.

ASH WEDNESDAY – The First United Methodist Church and The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Decatur will both have Ash Wednesday services Feb. 14. They will have a drive through imposition of ashes in the parking lot of the Methodist Church, 104 S. Miller St., 6:30-9 a.m., and both will hold traditional services at 6 p.m.

BASEBALL TIME – At 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, Little League teams will be introduced and the special needs baseball team will play at the Decatur High School baseball field. Following the game DHS baseball team will have a long ball contest. On Saturday, Feb. 17, the JV will scrimmage at 9:30 a.m. At noon, the varsity boys will play the alumni.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS – Weatherford College has opened its online scholarship application system for 2018-19 academic year scholarships provided by the WC Foundation. To start the application process, students should visit wc.edu/scholarships and use their existing “MyWC” login credentials to enter the system. Students must have completed the overall WC application to apply for scholarships. Deadline is March 24. The scholarships will begin in the fall 2018 semester, and many awards will renew for spring 2019, pending fall grade point averages.

SERVICE for Royce Lee Kirk, 81, of Boyd is pending at Jones-Decatur.

FUNERAL for William A. McCullough, Jr., 86, of Rhome is 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in the chapel at Jones Family Funeral Home in Decatur with burial at 2:15 p.m. at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Jones-Decatur.

SERVICE for Nicolas Perez, 41, of Decatur is 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Decatur with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

SERVICE for Yolanda Franco, 62, of Chico is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptizer Church in Bridgeport. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Bridgeport.

FUNERAL for Charles R. Knupp, 96, of Runaway Bay is 2 p.m. Saturday at Hawkins Chapel in Bridgeport with burial at West Bridgeport Cemetery. Family visitation is one hour prior to service.

MEMORIAL for Garey Webster, 63, of Boyd is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Aurora Baptist Church in Aurora. Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd is handling arrangements.

MEMORIAL service for Orval Leon “Popcorn” Chapman, 60, of Canyon Lake is 1 p.m. Saturday at Candlewood Suites in Decatur. He was the father of William Andrew Chapman of Boyd. Brown Owens Brumley Funeral Home in Fort Worth is handling arrangements.
