After 24 hours on the run, Johnny Ray Armstrong of Bridgeport was captured by law enforcement Thursday night in Alvord. Bridgeport Police Chief Steve Stanford said Armstrong will be charged with murder after shooting victim Ruben Dunlap, 20, died at Medical City Denton around 5:15 Thursday evening.

Stanford said the Wise County Sheriff’s Office and a helicopter from the Dallas Police Department assisted with the capture of Armstrong, who was located at the Alvord Truck Stop just before 10 p.m. Thursday. Armstrong initially refused to obey officers’ commands, Stanford said, so he was Tazed and taken into custody.

Dunlap was found shot in the head Wednesday night in Armstrong’s home in the 1500 block of Brush Street in Bridgeport. Armstrong had fled the scene, and his vehicle was found abandoned Wednesday night off Farm Road 1810 east of Chico.

Schools in Chico and Bridgeport both went into soft lockdown Thursday as a precaution. Stanford said Armstrong was not armed when he was caught.
