NEWSPAPER HONORSMessenger reporter Racey Burden was named “Journalist of the Year” at the annual convention of the North and East Texas Press Association in Granbury over the weekend. Photographer Joe Duty was presented the coveted Sam C. Holloway memorial award for journalism excellence. Duty is the fourth Messenger employee to receive the award in the past 44 years. Earlier winners were Ken Roselle, Skip Nichols and Roy Eaton. The Messenger won first place in General Excellence, first place in feature photos and first place in news photos. The paper won second place honors in column writing, sports coverage, editorials and page design plus third place in sports writing, feature writing and advertising.

BULLS SOCCER HEADS TO REGIONALS – Jesus Aguilar scored two goals, and Bridgeport added two more second half goals from Miguel Olmos and Milton Iniguez to seal a 4-1 victory over Stephenville at Aledo Friday. “[Aguilar] is playing on another level right now,” said Bridgeport coach C.J. Cartwright. “He had a big-time goal in that first half. The kid works his butt off and he’s humble. I couldn’t be happier for him.” With the win, Bridgeport advances to the 4A regional semifinal. They will take on Midlothian Heritage at 4 p.m. Friday at Birdville ISD’s Fine Arts and Athletic Complex. It is the second consecutive year the Bulls have made it to the regional tournament.

EAGLES FALL IN QUARTERFINALS – San Elizario beat Decatur for the second straight year in the 4A soccer regional quarterfinal, topping the Eagles 5-0 Saturday in Midland. Decatur ends its season at 16-11-2

WISE HOOPS TOURNAMENT – The deadline to register for the 16th annual Wise Hoops 3-on-3 basketball tournament sponsored by the Decatur Junior Woman’s Club is 6 p.m. Thursday. TAX PREPARATION – Area residents with low incomes can get free help preparing and filing their taxes. Volunteers will be at the Decatur Public Library 3-6:30 p.m. today. Bring the following information: W-2, 1099 forms (1099-INT, DIV, A, B, MISC, R, SSA), unemployment, pensions, etc.; any forms indicating federal income tax that is already paid; and receipts or canceled checks if you itemize deductions. Bring a picture ID for yourself (and your spouse) and Social Security cards or other official documentation for you and your dependents. Also bring a copy of last year’s income tax return.
