ESD 1 CALLS ELECTION – Wise County Emergency Services District No. 1 commissioners Thursday called an election for May 5 to ask voters to approve a maximum 10-cent tax rate. The district’s current rate is 3 cents per $100 of evaluation. The district plans to only levy a 6-cent tax for the next two years if it passes. Commissioners intend to approve a resolution later this month to reaffirm that promise to voters to keep the rate at 6 cents for next two years.

THOMPSON FOUND GUILTY OF ASSAULT – A Wise County jury yesterday found Robert Lee Thompson of Boyd guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a fight with a Paradise man on Aug. 23, 2016. Assistant District Attorney Jay Lapham presented evidence that Thompson stabbed Wayne Robinson Jr. during a fight the two had outside Robinson’s home. Thompson argued that he was acting in self defense. Late yesterday afternoon, the jury reached a verdict on punishment, sentencing Thompson to seven years in prison but asking that the sentence be probated. A hearing will be held next week to set the terms and conditions of that probation.

RECORD ENROLLMENT – Spring enrollment at Weatherford College set another record. As of the official count date, enrollment is 5,897, a 5.5 percent increase from last spring’s count. Weatherford College Wise County’s enrollment was up 3.8 percent from last spring with enrollment of 554.

FRIDAY NIGHT BASKETBALL – Tonight’s basketball games include: (boys) Northwest at Eaton, Decatur at Krum, Argyle at Bridgeport, Boyd at Bowie, Nocona at Paradise, Perrin at Alvord, Muenster at Chico and Slidell at Saint Jo. The Bridgeport girls will play Krum at Decatur High School at 7 p.m. The winner finishes third in District 9-4A and the loser finishes fourth.

SOFTBALL REGISTRATION – The last day to sign up for Decatur Girls Softball is 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the concession stand at Renshaw Park in Decatur. Cost is $65 for T-ball, $85 all for other leagues with a $10 discount for multiple siblings. Must bring birth certificate if you haven’t registered before. It will include 6U advanced t-ball, 8U coach pitch, 10U, 12U and 14U leagues. Online registration at decaturgsa.website.siplay.com/Site/More/Welcome. Practices will start the week of Feb. 19. NEW ESD PROPOSED – Boonsville community leaders are seeking to establish Emergency Services District No. 2, which would help fund the Boonsville/Balsora Volunteer Fire Department. Organizers will hold a second public meeting 3 p.m. Saturday at the Boonsville Community Center to continue the signature collection, which is required to get the initiative on the November ballot. The group needs 100 signatures of registered voters who are real property owners in the proposed district.

YOUTH SOCCER – Bridgeport youth soccer sign-ups are 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Bridgeport Public Library. Fee is $65.
