Chico announced Ciandra Seabourn as its new volleyball coach at a board meeting Tuesday night.

A graduate of Springtown, Seabourn, 23, was most recently the coach at Weatherford Christian. Seabourn played collegiately for a season at Cameron University in 2015, leading the team with 25 digs.

She was a Class 3A All-State selection in 2012.

“I definitely have a passion for the sport,” Seabourn said. “Even on the sideline, I’m in it with the girls. I’m up screaming and cheering them on. I’m not one of those coaches to sit back and relax. I give whatever I do 110 percent.”

Chico is coming off a 25-7 campaign last year. The Lady Dragons lost to Collinsville 3-2 in the bi-district round. Chico made a deep run in the playoffs in 2016, advancing to the 2A Region II semifinal before falling to Thrall 3-0.

The Lady Dragons finished the 2016 season 28-8 overall. Chico’s combined record over the past two years is 53-15.

“I’m super excited,” Seabourn said. “I’ve heard really good things about the girls. I know I’m getting a young class, so I’m ready to hopefully build on them and help them go a little bit deeper in the playoffs than they [did] this past year.”

Chico athletic director Clay Sanders said during the interview process Seabourn’s former coaches raved about her competitiveness and drive to succeed.

“They said they have never had a player that was able to channel the energy, passion and produce results on the court like she has,” Sanders said. “She basically coaches the same way she played in high school and college. That’s something I wanted to bring in to Chico. I wanted to bring in that fiery passion and that love. The biggest deal with her is she’s a kid magnet.

“She knows the expectations are high. I have full confidence in her.”

Seabourn’s contract will be finalized next month. Her hire is contingent upon her finishing her bachelor’s degree. Seabourn is currently enrolled at Tarleton State University, majoring in history. She will graduate in May.
