Cooper McDonald does not have to look far for inspiration on the track.

Just last year, his older brother, Caden, won the 5A state championship in discus with a throw of 190-6. Entering the UIL State Championships, Cooper is on track to do the same.

The Northwest sophomore launched the best throw of his career at the 5A Region I meet to claim gold, hurling 172-6. He has won the event at every meet this year.

“I’m really confident [I can win state],” Cooper said. “Caden has taught me a lot about discus since he’s done it. [He’s helped me] tremendously when he comes home. A couple weeks ago he came home, helped me out with technique and the next week I PR’d.”

Cooper is the youngest of three brothers who all went to Northwest. His oldest brother, Colton, is a senior at UNT and played linebacker for the Mean Green.

Caden is finishing his freshman campaign at San Diego State. He redshirted last year and was a first-team all-state selection for the Texans.

“There’s a little [pressure]. I just think of them as two older brothers who are very successful, and I’m just trying to do the same,” Cooper said. “It’s such a blessing being able to look up to two older brothers who work hard.”

Cooper said he is peaking at the right time. He has steadily increased his distances throughout the season.

At regionals last week, he made a 13-foot jump from area where he threw 159-2.

Cooper will compete at the UIL State Championships May 11 at the University of Texas at Austin. He believes his brothers have helped him grow as an athlete and is hoping his efforts culminate in a state title.

“Just having two big brothers as role models has been great,” Cooper said. “[They’ve] been leading the way for me, paving a path for me. I’ve got to fill big shoes, but I think I’m on the right track.”
