Paradise junior Maddie Mitschke had never run the 300 hurdles before this season. But in a span of two weeks, Mitschke has captured district and area titles in the event.

Despite battling a strain in her abdomen, Mitshcke won gold Monday night at Jacksboro, clocking a 47.57. Her performance catapulted her into the 3A Region I meet, which is April 28-29 in Abilene.

“I did not think I was going to win that,” Mitschke said. “I was very nervous. I always think there’s someone that’s going to beat me. I’m so excited and blessed. I’ve been working so hard for something awesome like this to happen.”

While Mitschke may have doubted herself, Paradise girls basketball coach Chad Woodard did not. Moments before the race, Mitschke said Woodard gave her a pep talk that helped pump her up to claim the championship.

“He looked me straight in the face, and I swear there may have been little tears in his eyes, and he said ‘You got this. I believe in you. You’ve worked hard your whole athletic career for this.’,” Mitschke said. “It touched me in the heart a little bit.”
