Track: McDonald, Harvey qualify for state

Northwest’s Cooper McDonald landed the best throw of his career in the discus Saturday in Lubbock to earn a region title and spot in the state meet.

McDonald claimed gold with his throw of 172-6. He beat second place by more than eight feet.

His brother, Caden, won the 5A state title last year in discus.

Northwest’s Jazzmine Harvey took silver in the high jump and also advanced to state. She cleared 5-6.

NeNe Phoenix from Lubbock Coronado won the regional crown with a jump of 5-7.

McDonald and Harvey will compete at the UIL State Championships May 11 at the University of Texas at Austin.
