Alvord junior Christina Thomas picked the perfect moment for the best throw of her career.

With the chance to advance to the UIL track and field championships for the first time, Thomas hurled the discus a personal-best 120-5. The throw landed her second place at the 2A Region II meet and propelled her to state

She will compete in the 2A final May 12 at Mike Myers Stadium at the University of Texas at Austin.

“I started crying,” Thomas said. “I was overwhelmed with joy.”

Thomas said she is representing her late friend and teammate, Kaely Beaver, who died last year.

Beaver was a standout athlete during her time at Alvord, qualifying for the state track and field championships in shot put as a sophomore. She finished ninth in 2A with a throw of 30-7.75 and is the school record holder in the event.

“We had been best friends since fourth grade,” Thomas said. “She was always there pushing me, helping me with practice. Even after we’d be done practicing, we’d stay 30 minutes to an hour, sometimes two hours after just talking, throwing and trying to coach each other.”

Thomas said Beaver’s death took a toll on her performance last season. After winning the District 11-2A title, Thomas finished fifth at area, missing out on regionals.

“I was so upset with everything that I choked up in area and didn’t even make it to regionals – and I made it to regionals my freshman year with her. It was really hard for me,” Thomas said. ‘Every meet was really bad.”

Thomas enters the state meet seeded eighth in 2A. Macy McNutt from Mertzon Irion County is the ranked first with a throw of 141-2.

“[Medaling] would honestly be the best thing ever,” Thomas said. “I’m just excited to even go there.”
