The Decatur swim team finished third overall at the District 6-5A meet last Saturday and will send several competitors to the regional meet Feb. 2-3 at the Mansfield Natatorium.

The girls finished second overall with a score of 113, while the boys finished fourth.

“I’m so proud,” said Decatur coach Amy Chabek. “I didn’t know I could be that excited at a swim meet. It was great. I have a shin splint right now because I was jumping so much.”

Three swimmers brought home gold medals.

Zach Levesque won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.8 seconds, narrowly edging out second place by 0.61 seconds.

“As I was finishing my race I saw I wasn’t exactly where I wanted to be, and that was in the lead, of course,” Levesque said. “I saw a former competitor ahead of me and thought ‘no, he can’t beat me.’

“I finally just gave it everything I had at that end, and I was dead. I was very pleased with my race. I almost started crying with excitement.”

On the girls side, Milly Rowden won the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. She posted times of 1:05.42 in the backstroke and 1:05.12 in the fly.

Jennifer Morehart won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:18.61.

Morehart and Milly Rowden teamed with Claire Mallory and Lizey Rowden on the winning 200-yard medley, which recorded a time of 2:02.19.

The same quartet won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:48.45.

Mallory finished second overall in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:03.25, along with the relays said.

“It was really exciting. ,” Mallory said. “I’m super pumped and ready for state.”

Decatur had seven swimmers medal individually. The boys also placed in the 200-meter relays, bringing home the bronze in both the medley (1:57.74) and freestyle relay (1:41.74). The relays included Major Smith, Layton Chancellor, Levesque and Caleb Black.
